Marking, Very, Nearly, Away
March 2011 at Highways Gallery, Santa Monica
“Marking, Very, Nearly, Away”, an interactive installation, invited
the audience to mark their presence in time and space. Using live
video feed and drawing, traditional and digital approaches to recording
the body are explored in real time through audience participation.
In this work, a space is created where the electronic body
and the human body collide, furthering my interests in how technology
impacts our experiences in the world. The viewer is invited to participate
in the work through drawing. By recording their presence in this
charged space, the project directly engages the audience. Mirroring
through a live feed reflects the viewer in a large projection. These
drawings are layered over pre-recorded footage of a drawing as it
is being made. The direct and tactile act of mark-making
is contrasted with the ephemeral digital image. The act
of leaving a physical mark, a record of ones presence, is connected
to the worn patina of names hand written on the gallery floor at
Highways – a memorial to those who have been lost to AIDS. |
